The demonstration featured a brief burst of steam that lifted the car into the air, allowing it to glide over the company’s electric semi‑truck.
Performance claims and flying technology
Executives said the new model can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 1 second. Engineers explained that four onboard thrusters, powered by compressed gas, enable the vehicle to reach a top speed of up to 385 mph, a figure Musk described as halfway to the speed of sound. The same thruster system is intended to generate downward force for rapid cornering.
Production timeline and variants
Tesla announced that series production will start in 2028, later than the original 2020 target. The company listed three versions on its reservation page: a two‑seat Performance model without thrusters, a limited Thrust variant, and an invite‑only Rocket version with a single seat. Reservations are currently accepted only for the Performance model.
Pricing and reservation details
When the Roadster 2 was first introduced, enthusiasts placed $50 000 deposits for a vehicle advertised at $200 000. Today the reservation page requires a $5 000 fee plus $45 000 payable within ten days. The car is projected to travel over 300 miles on a single charge, positioning it between mainstream electric vehicles and luxury EVs.
