Astronomers at Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics have confirmed the first rocky exoplanet with an atmosphere located in the habitable zone. The planet LHS 1140 b, situated 48 light-years away, represents the closest analogue to Earth discovered so far, meeting all three critical conditions for potential habitability: a rocky composition, proximity to its star that allows liquid water, and a retained atmosphere.

Researchers detected helium signatures around the exoplanet, providing strong evidence that its atmosphere has persisted for at least 3 billion years. The discovery was documented in the journal Science, based on observations from 2024 and 2025, though the planet itself was identified in 2017. By analyzing how helium escapes from the planet's upper layers, scientists successfully demonstrated a new technique for detecting atmospheres on distant worlds.

Atmosferik Yapı ve Habitabilite Soruları

While LHS 1140 b orbits within its star's habitable zone, the presence of an atmosphere does not confirm the existence of life. The detected helium suggests the atmosphere differs significantly from Earth's composition. Scientists theorize that heavier gases such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or carbon monoxide may exist in the planet's lower atmospheric layers, though further observation with more advanced instruments is needed to fully characterize these layers.

The atmosphere itself plays a crucial role in habitability. It enables liquid water to exist on a planet's surface by maintaining pressure and regulating temperature, while also shielding against harmful space radiation. The confirmation that at least one exoplanet has managed to retain an atmosphere represents a major step in understanding planetary evolution and the potential for habitability beyond Earth.

Yeni Keşif Yönteminin Önemi

The technique used to detect the helium signatures opens new possibilities for future exoplanet research. As Robin Wordsworth, a Harvard professor involved in the study, noted, scientists have progressed from wondering whether Earth-like planets exist to discovering they are common and finding some in habitable zones. The next milestone—confirming that at least one has retained an atmosphere—has now been achieved. Moving forward, improved telescopes and instruments will enable researchers to observe such planets in greater detail and investigate whether surface oceans or other habitability-compatible features exist.
